What kind of "sparks" will the new infrastructure and smart cities collide with?

2020-04-10

Recently, new infrastructure has been widely favored by the government, private sector, and capital. Provinces and cities have successively announced investment plans. The final data may far exceed 34 trillion. When these funds equivalent to one-third of the domestic GDP in 2019 are all poured into new infrastructure construction, what benefits will smart cities gain?

Smart cities are inseparable from new infrastructure support

The digital economy is represented by the application of emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, and 5G. According to the "Smart City Technology Reference Model", the smart city industry can be divided into a perception IoT layer, a network communication layer, Computing storage layer, data and service integration layer, smart application layer. In essence, the content of smart city construction is the digital economy.

"New infrastructure" is a new type of infrastructure that serves the digital economy. The stable and efficient operation of smart city-related systems and equipment is inseparable from the support of "new infrastructure" such as 5G, artificial intelligence, and big data centers.

New infrastructure is conducive to narrowing the digital divide and regional disparities

The construction of new infrastructure provides an opportunity for smart cities to narrow the digital divide and regional gaps.

The core of the new infrastructure in smart cities is to connect the infrastructure of related technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and 5G with specific application fields such as transportation, finance, and environmental protection to promote the digital development of various industries. This is conducive to building a city-level data center, giving full play to the effectiveness of artificial intelligence, breaking data islands, and promoting the interconnection of everything in a smart city.

For small cities with incomplete infrastructure, the new infrastructure of smart cities will also promote the redistribution of social resources such as economy, education, and talents, and narrow the gap with large cities. Specifically, if small cities also have services such as smart services and high-speed networks, all kinds of talents and projects will have a higher probability of choosing small cities to promote urban development and increase my country's urbanization rate.

New infrastructure supports urban smart transformation

Railways, highways, and power grids have respectively supported the mechanization, electrification, and automated urban revolutions, while the smart city transformation will be supported by new infrastructure.

At present, there are two benchmarks for smart city construction: one is Shenzhen, and the other is Singapore, which is known as "Smart Nation 2.0". The two have one thing in common, that is, the improvement of communication infrastructure and overall transmission efficiency.

The focus of the smart city 3.0 era that my country will vigorously promote in the future is 5G and cloud computing. It not only pays attention to infrastructure and information transmission efficiency, but also pays more attention to the Internet of Everything and software-defined city services.

At present, relevant policies have been issued by provinces and cities. For example, the Chongqing Municipal Housing and Urban-rural Development Committee issued guidance on the overall planning and promotion of the construction of urban infrastructure Internet of Things, proposed to build a standard system of urban infrastructure Internet of Things, and empowered drainage, road networks, parking, Sponge cities and other fields; Henan issued 674 industrial transformation and development projects centered on digital economy and advanced manufacturing, and proposed to achieve full coverage of 5G in urban areas above the county seat and launch large-scale commercial use of 5G across the province; Yunnan will also "5G "Full coverage" is one of the top ten projects.

Zheng Jian, deputy director of the Basic Department of the Development and Reform Commission, also said that in the future, an infrastructure system that meets the development needs of a smart economy and a smart society will be built.

In short, the new infrastructure realizes the digital, networked and intelligent development of the city, and promotes the refinement and modernization of city operations and governance.
